GOP Leader Scolds Ocasio-Cortez On Holocaust Comments: ‘She Does Not Understand History’

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said its time for Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to apologize for comparing migrant detention facilities to concentration camps used during the Holocaust.

At a press conference on Wednesday, McCarthy said the New York Democrat “does not understand history.”

“The United States is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are. They are concentration camps,” Ocasio-Cortez contended during a live video shared over social media to her followers, the Washington Examiner reports.

Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks were in reference to the migrant detention centers where migrants are placed while their asylum requests are processed.

McCarthy, a Republican from California, responded: “I think Congresswoman AOC needs to apologize, not only to the nation but to the world. She does not understand history. She does not understand what’s going on at the border at the same time. But there is no comparison & to actually say that is really embarrassing.”

Ocasio-Cortez followed up her live stream with a series of tweets where she continued to akin the efforts of the U.S.immigration forces at the southern border to Nazi soldiers during the Second World War.

“This administration has established concentration camps on the southern border of the United States for immigrants, where they are being brutalized with dehumanizing conditions and dying,” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.

She added:

And:

“Ocasio-Cortez’s statement has since received significant backlash. Both the Auschwitz memorial and Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, weighed in on the debacle,” the Washington Examiner adds.
