A clash over Twitter involving congressional newcomer Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Republican giant Steve Scalise escalated out of control after her supporters threatened his life.
The alarming altercation began when Scalise, who serves as the Minority Whip in Congress, commented on Ocasio-Cortez’s proposal to tax the wealthiest Americans up to 60 or 70 percent of their income.
“Republicans: Let Americans keep more of their own hard-earned money. Democrats: Take away 70% of your income and give it to leftist fantasy programs,” Scalise said in a tweet.
Ocasio-Cortez, who is the youngest member of Congress, announced the proposal during an interview with “60 Minutes.” Here’s more on it, from Fox News:
Rising Democratic star Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., said in a new interview that she could fund her proposed “Green New Deal” in part by slapping a tax as high as 70 percent on top earners.
And, via Politico:
Speaking with Anderson Cooper in a “60 Minutes” interview scheduled to air Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez said a dramatic increase in taxes could support her “Green New Deal” goal of eliminating the use of fossil fuels within 12 years — a goal she acknowledges is ambitious.
“What is the problem with trying to push our technological capacities to the furthest extent possible?” Ocasio-Cortez asked. “There’s an element where yeah, people are going to have to start paying their fair share in taxes.”
Ocasio-Cortez pointed out that in a progressive tax rate system, not all income for a high earner is taxed at such a high rate. Rather, rates increase on each additional level of income, with dramatic increases on especially high earnings, such as $10 million.
The New York congresswoman answered Scalise in another tweet which questioned his tax policy knowledge.
“You’re the GOP Minority Whip. How do you not know how marginal tax rates work?” Ocasio-Cortez asked.
“Oh that’s right, almost forgot: GOP works for the corporate CEOs showering themselves in multi-million💰bonuses; not the actual working people whose wages + healthcare they’re ripping off for profit,” she added in the tweet.
After this response, at least one of Ocasio-Cortez’s supporters threatened Scalise’s life—invoking the name of the man who actually shot Scalise during a congressional baseball game in 2017.
“Hi @AOC,” Scalise said. “Happy to continue this debate on the Floor of the People’s House, but it’s clearly not productive to engage here with some of your radical followers. #StayClassy”
