Trump Swipes ‘Dummy Beto’ For Fumbling Bipartisan Gun Reform Push

President Trump is placing blame on “Dummy Beto” O’Rourke for causing the current bipartisan push for gun reform to fail.

In a tweet on Wednesday morning, Trump said the Democratic presidential candidate had “made it much harder to make a deal” as O’Rourke continues to call for “assault weapons” to be outlawed.

The president said Republicans and others in the public are shying away from supporting a potential deal as they are worried about mandatory gun buy-backs or gun confiscation.

“Convinced many that Dems just want to take your guns away. Will continue forward!” Trump added in the tweet.

Politico reports even several of O’Rourke’s Democratic colleagues are criticizing the way he speaks on gun reform:

The president was presumably referencing O’Rourke’s call at last week’s Democratic debate for a mandatory federal buyback of assault weapons.

“Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” the former Texas congressman declared at the forum in Houston. “We’re not going to allow it to be used against our fellow Americans any more.”

“I frankly think that that clip will be played for years at Second Amendment rallies with organizations that try to scare people by saying Democrats are coming for your guns,” Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) told CNN on Friday.

Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) said on “Fox News Sunday” that O’Rourke’s “message doesn’t help,” and asked Sunday by CNN whether O’Rourke said something “that’s playing into the hands of Republicans,” Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, Indiana, replied: “Yes.”

According to the report, President Trump is continuing to meet with and speak with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to discuss gun reform legislation. This could include increased background checks, as Trump claimed to support shortly after a pair of shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio. Other ideas which have been pitched by Democratic lawmakers include “red flag” laws or barring certain weapon types.
