The former chairman of the Psychiatry Department at Duke University said he believes President Trump is among history’s worst national leaders ever—ranking him worse than Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong.
Dr. Allen Frances shared his belief during an interview on CNN’s “Reliable Sources.”
In the interview, Frances first suggested it was unfair to call President Trump “mentally ill” as it was an insult to those with mental illnesses. He said Trump’s behavior and actions are more severe and problematic than those people with mental illnesses that he is aware of.
“Well, I think ‘medicalizing’ politics has three very dire consequences,” Frances began per the Washington Examiner. “The first is that it stigmatizes the mentally ill. I’ve known thousands of patients, almost all of them are well-behaved, well-mannered good people. Trump is none of these.”
“Lumping that is a terrible insult to the mentally ill and they have enough problems and stigma as it is,” he claimed.
“Second, calling Trump crazy hides the fact that we’re crazy for having elected him and even crazier for allowing his crazy policies to persist,” the clinical psychologist continued. “Trump is as destructive a person in this century as Hitler, Stalin, Mao in the last century. He may be responsible for many more million deaths than they were.”
And where was host Brian Stelter during these absurd claims?
He reportedly did not interrupt his guest because he could not hear him due to “technical difficulties.”
I agree that I should have interrupted after that line. I wish I had heard him say it, but I was distracted by tech difficulties (that's why the show open didn't look the way it normally does, I had two computers at the table, etc). Not hearing the comment is my fault.

The Washington Examiner reports:
Between the three dictators Frances used as examples, Chairman Mao Zedong killed the most people, up to 45 million, through his policies during his “Great Leap Forward.”
Under Joseph Stalin, who led the Soviet Union from the 1920s until his death in 1953, around 20 million people died in labor camps, forced collectivization that resulted in famines, and executions in his many purges.
The Holocaust perpetrated by Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime killed around 11 million people.
Here’s how some conservatives responded online:
How didn’t you fact-check him right then and there, @brianstelter?
“Trump may have killed more people than Hitler and Mao.”
20-45 million people were killed under the Mao regime, Hitler was responsible for the deaths of more than 20 million people.
This segment is shameful. https://t.co/zKrIFjwWCu

One of the great mysteries of our time is how a nutty conspiracy theorist like Brian Stelter helms a show titled “Reliable Sources.” https://t.co/PfNZ4ek3lu

CNN has absolutely no credibility. An unhinged guest this morning said @realDonaldTrump “may be responsible for many more million deaths” than Hitler, Stalin, and Mao. The anchor gave no pushback whatsoever and allowed this dangerous monologue for over two minutes. Unbelievable. https://t.co/67F7Y1VpaZ

I’m still shocked that this actually happened. https://t.co/df6yR4dV5f

Another absurd thing about this segment is the fact that Stelter had 2 psychiatrists on his show to talk about a politician’s mental health and he did *not* ask them any questions about Biden, who didn’t know what state he was in yesterday https://t.co/0qwH6pBsu1
