BREAKING: Trump Responds To El Paso, Dayton Shooting Incidents

A gunman opened fire in an entertainment district in Dayton, Ohio, killing at least nine people and injuring 26 others before law enforcement officers quickly confronted the gunman.

USA Today reports authorities responded to the incident within seconds, killing the gunman.

“Hundreds of people in the Oregon District could be dead today” if it were not for the quick actions of the law enforcement officers, Mayor Nan Whaley said via the report.

From USA Today:

In Dayton, Assistant Chief of Police Matt Carper said the shooting began at about 1:07 a.m. EDT and involved a “very short timeline of violence” before the attacker was killed. He said the gunman appeared to have acted alone, but that the investigation was continuing. The Oregon District is a trendy stretch of bars and restaurants.

“Downtown Dayton is a very safe area,” Carper said. “This is unheard of and very sad. It’s a very tragic evening.”

The Dayton shooting on Sunday morning occurred less than 24 hours after 20 people were killed and 26 others were injured during a shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas.

Here’s more on the Dayton shooting, per USA Today:

Carper said security cameras in the area were being studied and hundreds of witnesses interviewed. The FBI was joining the investigation, he said.

Whaley said the shooter wore body armor and was armed with a “high capacity” rifle and extra magazines.

“In less than a minute, Dayton first responders neutralized the shooter,” she said. “This is a terribly sad day for the city, but I am amazed by the response.”

President Trump responded to both shooting incidents, saying the El Paso shooting was “not only tragic, it was an act of cowardice.”

“I know that I stand with everyone in this Country to condemn today’s hateful act,” he tweeted. “There are no reasons or excuses that will ever justify killing innocent people.”

“Melania and I send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the great people of Texas,” the president also said.

“The FBI, local and state law enforcement are working together in El Paso and in Dayton, Ohio. Information is rapidly being accumulated in Dayton. Much has already be learned in El Paso. Law enforcement was very rapid in both instances. Updates will be given throughout the day!” Trump added in another tweet.

“God bless the people of El Paso Texas,” he said. “God bless the people of Dayton, Ohio.”
