ALT: UH-OH: Loretta Lynch Throws Comey Under the Bus, Claims She Never Told Him To Call Clinton Scandal a ‘Matter’
The American people may never know what all happened behind the scenes of the Obama Administration, including how they conducted Hillary Clinton’s investigation, but thanks to Republican Congressman Doug Collins, the American people are now able to read transcripts of testimonies from Justice Department and FBI officials.
In the new transcripts released on Monday evening, former Attorney General Loretta Lynch threw former FBI Director James Comey under the bus, claiming she never instructed him to refer to the Clinton investigation as a “matter.”
Previously, Comey testified that he was specifically ordered by the then-attorney general not to publicly refer to the investigation as an investigation, what some people at the time speculated was a strategic move to help then-presidential candidate Clinton.
If we travel back to June 2017, we have former FBI director James Comey testifying that at one point Lynch directed him to call the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s mishandling of classified materials as “a matter,” not an investigation, something Comey said “confused and concerned” him.
“I did not. I have never instructed a witness as to what to say specifically. Never have, never will,” Lynch told House Oversight and Judiciary committee members, via the transcripts.
The Washington Examiner adds:
He [Comey] told the Senate Intelligence Committee in 2017 that Lynch “directed” him to call the investigation a “matter” during a September 2015 meeting. Comey brought it up in the context of describing his decision to do a press conference in the summer of 2016 in which he recommended no criminal charges against Clinton but called her handling of classified information “extremely careless.”
“Probably the only other consideration that I guess I can talk about in open setting is that at one point the attorney general had directed me not to call it an investigation, but instead to call it a matter, which confused me and concerned me, but that was one of the bricks in the load that led me to conclude I have to step away from the department if we’re to close this case credibly,” he testified.
Lynch’s Phoenix tarmac meeting with former President Bill Clinton on a hot summer’s day in 2016 was the driving reason for his decision to do a press conference due to concerns about optics, Comey added, as Hillary Clinton was a Democratic candidate for president at the time.
Lynch, via the Washington Examiner, later said: “I didn’t direct anyone to use specific phraseology. When the Director asked me how to best to handle that, I said: What I have been saying is we have received a referral and we are working on the matter, working on the issue, or we have all the resources we need to handle the matter, handle the issue. So that was the suggestion that I made to him.”
She later described that she was “quite surprised” with Comey’s interpretation of their conversation “because that was not how it was conveyed to him, certainly not how it was intended.”
Donald Trump Jr. took to Twitter on Tuesday to contend “one of them is lying” about the exchange.
