The GoFundMe fundraiser that Purple Heart recipient and triple amputee Brian Kolfage launched to help privately fund a border wall fell well short of its $1 billion goal. As a result, the platform announced it would be refunding more than $20 million to over 340,000 donors.
On Saturday, it was widely reported that Kolfage was not done with his plan to help privately fund the wall as he announced he would be redirecting the funds that were raised to a privately-owned LLC, “We Will Build The Wall.”
In a statement to Breitbart News, Kolfage doubled down on his commitment to funding the wall with the already-raised money and reportedly said he would not be refunding it.
“The money is not being refunded,” Kolfage told Breitbart News Washington Editor Matt Boyle as Breitbart reports. “I made a promise to everybody if we didn’t hit one billion we would refund the money.”
Instead, Kolfage is redirecting the funds and is giving people the option to opt out, Breitbart reports.
“I’m giving people the chance to opt out of this and get their money back if they don’t want to move forward in building the wall to protect the American people,” Kolfage said.
“We’re going to build the wall mile by mile on private property for half the cost of what the government is currently paying,” the veteran continued, per the report.
“We have farmers, ranchers, landowners who want the wall and they are lining up for us to build the wall on their property right now,” Kolfage added. “And that is what we’re doing.”
Kolfage refuted any suspicions that he was using the money for personal gain and promised not to take a salary organizing “this entire project.”
“I am taking zero salary and zero compensation on this entire project,” Kolfage said via Breitbart.
The Purple Heart recipient said he had a “dream team” leading the project which includes former Congressman Tom Tancredo, American Businessman John Daniel Moran, Jr., Sheriff David Clarke, and “Angel” parents Steve Ronnebeck and Mary Ann Mendoza.
