On Saturday, the current federal government shutdown became the longest ever recorded in U.S. history.
Despite more than three weeks of negotiations on how to end the shutdown, it seems any conclusion is unlikely to occur soon. As the situation stands, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have shown an unwillingness to allocate $5.7 billion for the construction of a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Democrats have argued that the figure is too big—they have offered $1.3 billion for the wall—that walls do not even work, and that the wall would send a negative message to the world.
But Trump wants the wall, his supporters want him to get the wall, so he’s fixed on getting it.
So, the sides are gridlocked.
A new report from CBS 21 shows the $5.7 billion that Trump is requesting may not be that impossible of a figure for Congress to whip up as is equates to just $17 a person.

From the report:
President Trump wants $5.7 billion for a border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. It sounds like a lot of money, but it’s a small drop in the bucket for the federal government whose entire budget is over $4 trillion this year.
So, how much would Trump’s wall cost you? With roughly 328 million people in the United States, it would cost each person about $17.
According to the report, Republican Congressman Phil Roe said: “Compared to what the size of the entire budget or even the homeland security budget, it’s a small amount of money, to help secure the border.”
As the Western Journal reports, the factor preventing either Trump or congressional Democrats from reopening the federal government could be the political implications at stake ahead of the 2020 election. Should one side cave on their views, then they would be giving their opposition more material to campaign on in the upcoming election.
From the Western Journal:
The possibility of President Trump securing the border and making progress to begin fixing the illegal immigration problem before the 2020 elections scares Democrats.
After all, what will it mean for Democratic candidates if they have to compete with a president who actually made good on his election promises to the American people?
Instead, CBS 21 reports that Democrats are only offering to shell out an even smaller $1.3 billion for border security. But make no mistake, money’s not the issue for them.
The program is estimated to cost taxpayers more than $49.109 trillion in its first ten years. This amount would fund the border wall a whopping 8,616 times over.
President Trump is persisting in the negotiations and has previously said he could declare a national emergency to get the border funding. Such a move would open up Department of Defense funding for him to use on the border wall’s construction.
The president said he has thought about it, but has not committed yet on the move as it would almost immediately be contested in the courts.
