The government is still shut down and lawmakers seem content to allow the shutdown to coast into 2019 and into the next session of Congress where new lawmakers will meet with President Trump to negotiate a solution.
Trump took to Twitter and threatened an ultimatum for these new members to consider ahead of their arrival to the nation’s capital: Support the construction of the border wall or he will close the Southern border.
“We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with,” the president said in a tweet on Friday morning.
From ABC News:
The government has been partially shut down since last week over an impasse between Trump and Democrats over funding for a proposed security wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. The government shutdown, which has kept hundreds of thousands of federal employees out of work, is expected to extend into the new year.
On Thursday, the Senate was in session for only four minutes after lawmakers didn’t show up. They aren’t expected in Washington again until the middle of next week.
Trump initially requested $5 billion for the construction of a new border wall but has since said he would be open to smaller offers.
In the tweet, Trump seemingly dinged Republican lawmakers who hold majorities in both legislative chambers until next year. Democrats will hold a majority in the House come January 3.
“Hard to believe there was a Congress & President who would approve!” Trump added.

“The United States loses soooo much money on Trade with Mexico under NAFTA, over 75 Billion Dollars a year (not including Drug Money which would be many times that amount), that I would consider closing the Southern Border a ‘profit making operation,'” Trump said in another tweet.
“We build a Wall or close the Southern Border,” the president again emphasized. “Bring our car industry back into the United States where it belongs. Go back to pre-NAFTA, before so many of our companies and jobs were so foolishly sent to Mexico.”
“Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border,” Trump echoed again.
“Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador are doing nothing for the United States but taking our money,” the president contended. “Word is that a new Caravan is forming in Honduras and they are doing nothing about it. We will be cutting off all aid to these 3 countries – taking advantage of U.S. for years!”
