There are a lot more smiling faces in Nashville, Tennessee this Christmas season as music icon Kid Rock fully paid off the Walmart layaway balances for 350 families.
As MSNBC affiliate WBIR reports, Rock gave $81,000 to a Walmart located at 3458 Dickerson Pike to help families pay off the remainder of their balances.
“Kudos to Kid Rock for making such a gesture in our community,” store manager Tom Meyer said. “I think that’s a pretty Nashville proud moment.”
Rock took to social media to credit actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry with the idea for the donation.
“@tylerperry Great idea!” Rock wrote. “I followed your lead and paid off the layaway at my local Walmart in Nashville. Merry Christmas and God Bless You!”
Here’s more on Rock, from WBIR:
Meyer said Kid Rock called the store on Friday morning, explaining that he wanted to spread some good cheer by paying down the balances. Kid Rock’s manager later came into the store to make the big payment.
It was a shocking, cool moment for Meyer, he said. And it has been an awesome experience letting customers know their accounts have been paid off. The items on lawaway are likely Christmas gifts since the store only offers the program during the holiday season, Meyer said.
The layaway customers, who have been coming into the store as a result of Kid Rock’s gesture, are wearing shocked and smiling faces, Meyer said. Each one is being handed a card explaining that Kid Rock made the payment on their behalf, he said.
“Merry Christmas from your neighbor!” the cards read.
BizPac Review reports that Perry gave $434,000 to two Walmart stores. One is in East Point, Georgia and the other one in Douglasville.
Although Perry said he wanted the donation to be a secret, “nothing is secret these days,” he said in a video uploaded to social media confessing to the donation.
“I have paid for all of your layaways for Christmas. So Merry Christmas to everybody,” Perry said in the video. “You got to go into the Walmart, get your layaway and pay a penny, one penny, and you get your layaway. I know it’s hard times and a lot of people are struggling. I’m just really really grateful to be able to be in a position to do this. So, God bless you. Go get your stuff.”
“I was trying to do this anonymously but oh well!!!” the video is captioned.
