After Measure To Defund Planned Parenthood Fails, Rand Paul RIPS Colleagues

Congressional Republicans have still not defunded Planned Parenthood.

Republican Senator Rand Paul proposed a measure to defund the abortion giant Thursday and urged his colleagues to fulfill their promise to the American people.

But, it failed.

The amendment to the appropriations bill would have discontinued federal funding from going to Planned Parenthood, saving the lives of seemingly countless unborn and lowering federal spending.

But, again, it failed.

Paul was only able to garner the support of 44 of his colleagues as the measure failed to reach the 60-vote threshold. It should be noted that Paul’s amendment is already included in the appropriations bill in the House of Representatives.

The Kentucky Republican ridiculed his party and others in the chamber for not sticking up for the lives of the unborn and said his effort was a “fight worth having.”

“While I am disappointed in the outcome of this vote, I will never apologize for standing up for life,” Paul said in a press release, following the vote. “If it took exposing the preference of so many in my own party to continue reckless spending over protecting the innocent, it was a fight worth having.”

Per the press release:

This afternoon, after speaking on the Senate floor to expose Republicans for blocking his efforts to protect life so they could instead greatly expand the welfare-warfare state, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) secured a vote on his amendment to stop taxpayer dollars from going to Planned Parenthood and other entities that perform abortions.

Though the Senate chose to continue the status quo in a 45-48 vote, Dr. Paul’s stand forced the Senate on the record on what government is doing with the American people’s money.

Paul accused some Republicans in the chamber of favoring “big spending” to defending the lives of innocent children. He even pointedly asked: “The question is, what is more important to these Republicans? Saving lives or spending money?”

“Planned Parenthood receives over $400 million of taxpayer money,” Paul argued. “The government, with a win and a nod, tells us that Planned Parenthood doesn’t spend the money on abortions, but everybody knows that the taxpayers are really cross-subsidizing Planned Parenthood’s abortion mills.”

“This appropriations bill before us exceeds the spending caps by nearly $100 billion,” Paul continued. “Big-spending Republicans fear that blocking funding from Planned Parenthood would derail their plans to greatly expand the welfare-warfare state.”

As Town Hall reports, Planned Parenthood has performed 321,384 abortions this past year and was given $543.7 million from the federal government.

Later on social media, the March for Life commended Paul on the effort.
