Actor James Woods has become a no-nonsense, conservative voice many of the political and social issues facing Americans today. On Saturday, he dipped his toes into the debates concerning family breakups along the Southern border.
Recent reports have indicated that the Trump administration has detained nearly 2,000 children at the border after their parents illegally crossed it and were arrested between April 19 and the end of the month of May. These children were then taken into the care of the Health and Human Services Department.
Per Associated Press:
The figures show that 1,995 minors were separated from 1,940 adults from April 19 through May 31. The separations were not broken down by age, and included separations for illegal entry, immigration violations or possible criminal conduct by the adult.
Under a “zero tolerance” policy announced by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Department of Homeland Security officials are now referring all cases of illegal entry for criminal prosecution. U.S. protocol prohibits detaining children with their parents because the children are not charged with a crime and the parents are.
Sessions announced the effort April 6, and Homeland Security began stepping up referrals in early May, effectively putting the policy into action.
Since then, stories of weeping children torn from the arms of their frightened parents have flooded the media and the policy has been widely criticized by church groups, politicians and children’s advocates who say it is inhumane. A battle in Congress is brewing in part over the issue.
The situation has erupted into political and moral debates across the country and over the internet. Some people say these detentions are cruel and families should never be separated in such a manner. Others suggest the individuals illegally crossing the border are doing so to the detriment of their own families and are causing themselves the injustice.
A tweet from Woods seems to suggest he finds himself in the latter camp.
“Want to stay together as a family? Simple. Don’t do this…” Woods tweeted on Saturday with an accompanying picture of two individuals climbing over a wall.

Woods’ response sounds similar to that of Attorney General Jeff Sessions when he first announced the zero-tolerance policy.
He said, “If you are smuggling a child then we will prosecute you, and that child will be separated from you as required by law. If you don’t like that, then don’t smuggle children over our border.”
Several people who commented on Woods’ post agreed.
“Bingo,” one user responded.
“Funny how liberals pick and choose which laws should be enforced,” replied another.
Here’s how more people responded:
Who knows if it is even their children?…………..I would never put my children through anything like these people. If you want a safe and happy future for your children Apply for LEGAL immigration.

Baffling, I have a 17 year son and think to myself, under NO circumstances would I consider this knowing we could be separated in the process. Don’t tell me they don’t know this could happen and that they are clueless about our laws.

We are a nation of immigrants but we are also a nation of laws. We must come to our senses & recognize that the 2 are NOT mutually exclusive. We can enforce our laws AND allow immigrants in – through the door w/background checks! Gov’t created this mess by not enforcing the laws.

The problem of having children separated from their parents near the southern border is nothing new under the Trump administration, but has been a problem for many years. The ACLU previously published a detailed report on injustices near the border which occurred under the Obama administration.
“In more than one case, people brought otherwise unaccompanied minors with them even though there was no family relation,” the Maven reports, citing the ACLU findings. “Still, there were cases where actual parents were separated from their children during the Obama years. It did happen.”
President Trump and members of Congress are reportedly working on a solution.
